Malacca trip

22 dec- 24 dec.

Introduction

Yes, GolfKaki Christmas cup 2 is back again and this year competition is held at our favorite place, Malacca.

This year Championship is base on Best Gross and Best Net. The aim is to ensure the low handicappers have a chance to win the Best Gross and the high handicappers the Best Net.

Two crystal jugs were up for grabs as last years Champ, Wong kah Keng chicken out.

The trip

Morning jam at second link, all arrive late except for organizer/ president, Pach Ang. Last one to arrive, Frankie as usual. Lesson learnt, don't wait at first stop, because no food. Next time give timings to be at customs and meet at Marchap for breakfast.

The journey to Malacca was raining all the way and we arrive to a wet and grey overcast day. Golfers were gloomy as it  didn't appear like golf was going to happen, children were disappointed as they can go swimming.

So we decided to check in first at Century Mahkota Hotel and have lunch.

Frankie tried his first taste of chicken rice ball and realize why we always come here.

This trip had a lot of golfkaki family joining us. Mike and family ( 4 ), Frankie and family ( 3), Hong Chua and family ( 5), Pach and Viven, Hanson and wife, Chee Keng and family (5) and lastly bachelor boy, aka The Speedster Han.

Golfkaki welcome our new member Chee Keng who was introduced by Hanson Wong. We hope he will find his experience with us wonderful and join us for future games.

Ayer Keroh

The golf Kaki Christmas Cup 2 started at 1300hrs on Ayer Keroh Golf club. After being led to the OB line of Malacca by Hanson, we arrived at the classic old cow grass course. The weather turn to our favour, the rain disappeared but the sky still grey and  overcast. We Teed off on a cool windy condition, golf weather at its best.

First flight made up of Frankie, Mike, Pach and Hong Chua ( our cow for slaughter). Second flight, Hanson, Vivien, Han and Chee Keng.

Ayer Keroh famous trees growing  in the middle of the fairway punish most of us. Made us miserable as good tee shots clip branches and shot straight into the rough. Fairways condition were good and tight. A miss will land you in the jungle where the ball will never be found, unless the monkey throws it out.

The greens, surprisingly were firm and the roll perfectly true.

For those who fade or slice their tee shots this is a good course for you ( Chan Keng Khew take note ), because most of the fairway dogleg to the right.

Hong Chua the sacrificial cow of flight  one got slaughtered with 54 vegas ponts at 1 ringgit per point. However, two chip in from 20m made his day but didn't save his pay.

Overall Ayer Keroh provide us with the warm up we needed. We like the course design except for the trees growing in the middle of the fairways.

The only downside is the club house and the starter house which is nothing but a shed. Recommended not to take a nighteen hole drink there, rather proceed back to Malacca which was what we did.

It was dinner and shopping with the family for night activities.

A'Famosa

Day two 23 Dec

Met at the lobby at 0730hrs and proceed to the best Ba Kut Teh in Malacca. Must try the Chicken wine soup for some potent effect.

The weather was perfect in the morning for our assault on A'Famosa. The golfers proceeded to the golf course while the family to the water world near by.

We played on the famous A'famosa Palm and Rockies course.

Weather was fantastic and true enough, par's and birdies were in order. Fairways were well kept and the green's soft enough to stop you're approach shots. The scenery is beautiful with bluish water and colorful plants decorating the fairways.

We started on Palm course at 1045hrs.

Hanson wife, Mel playing with Viven as Chee Keng had to take care of the family, Han and Hong Chua.

Frankie, Mike, Hanson and Pach in one flight.

We stop for lunch after nine holes and tried the buffet lunch. We had 50% discount for golfers which made the Rm 29 lunch worth while.

A'Famosa is indeed a Championship course. It is long and narrow with lots of bunkers and water to swallow your ball, as Frankie, who return with a 93 will tell you. Course management is a must and golfers who play the course according to their abilities willl be rewarded. Those who attack it head on will find three digits on their score cards.

We met our family's and proceeded for dinner at Portuguese settlement. Seafood dinner cooked Eurasian style.

Mmm..the salt heat pepper crab is a must to try, salty and spicy on the outside and creamy on the inside.

In the night we celebrated Pach and Vivien anniversary at the hotel lounge with wine and cheese.

Tiara Melaka

Day 3 24 Dec

Tiara golf course - Woodland and Meadows.

Woke up with a hangover and proceeded to Tiara golf club  where all the golfers met at 9 am.

After the tough course of A'Famosa, Tiara was easy.  No complains from golfers about the course, everything is well maintained. Greens were slow in the morning due to the damp condition but were fast and firm by afternoon.

Flight mates remain unchanged. The top guns for best gross were Frank and Mike, Best net were Pach, Frank and Hanson.

Chee seng joined the first flight with Vivien, Han and Hong Chua.

A new Golf kaki record was set by Hanson Wong who shot a 16 on a par 5 hole.  Amazingly, Hanson still clinch the best net with a gross of 102. Hats off to this guy who can put in on from 170m but chip 4 ball into the water from 60m.

Prizes

At the end of the day, prizes were given to the Top Gross Mike Gee with a 3 day total of 256. Top Net when to Hanson Wong with a 3 day total of 229 handicap 24.

Conclusion

This year Christmas cup was most enjoyable. Play was confine to one game a day which left time to relax and enjoy the food of Malacca. Family members got to see their golfing daddys and couple without children had time to try for it. We look forward to Chriistmas Cup 3 and thank our club President Pach Ang and Vivien for organsing this event.
